Technological innovations in the digital era have ushered us into a world filled with both potentials and risks. One of the most significant threats is deepfake technology, which allows manipulation of video and audio using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to create new and authentic-look content. Deepfakes can convincingly mimic a person’s face and voice, spreading false information or deceiving people, posing a severe threat to security and trust in digital interactions.
A survey by VIDA, a leading Electronic Certification Provider (PSrE) in Indonesia, detailed in the whitepaper “WHAT THE FAKE?: Siapkah Bisnis di Indonesia Melawan Penipuan Deepfake yang Dihasilkan AI?” revealed that only 58% of professionals in Indonesia understand deepfake technology, and 90% of them are unsure how to combat this fraud effectively. The National Cyber and Crypto Agency (BSSN) reported 361 million cyberattacks from January to October 2023, resulting in financial losses of IDR 14.5 trillion.
Semuel Abrijani Pangerapan, Director General of Informatics Applications at the Ministry of Communication and Informatics, emphasized the urgent need to increase awareness about deepfake technology during the launch and discussion of VIDA’s whitepaper in Senayan, Jakarta (April 24). “We need to understand and anticipate this digital threat. Best practices and governance policies must be reinforced,” he stated. He praised VIDA’s innovation in designing a layered defense solution to effectively detect and neutralize cyber fraud.
“Deepfake technology introduces a new era of cyber threats that can instantly undermine trust and security in digital business interactions. Deepfakes have the potential to damage the reputations of individuals and companies, cause public doubt about digitally conveyed information, and even trigger conflicts and tensions in an already complex business environment. To tackle this major challenge, VIDA introduces VIDA Deepfake Shield, an advanced layered defense solution designed to empower digital businesses to efficiently detect and neutralize deepfake fraud,” said Niki Luhur, Founder and Group CEO VIDA.
Victor Indajang, Chief Operating Officer of VIDA, elaborated on the capabilities of VIDA Deepfake Shield. “Our solution is designed based on three main principles: real-time identity verification to authenticate all users, seamless integration across digital platforms, and innovative exclusive defense mechanisms to protect against sophisticated digital threat viruses.”
Digital security is not just an individual responsibility but also a collective effort to create a safe and trustworthy digital environment. By increasing awareness, providing continuous education, and the implementation of appropriate security technologies, we can collectively combat the threat of deepfakes and maintain the integrity of the digital world.
Cooperation between technology companies like VIDA and communication agencies like ID COMM plays a strategic role in preserving the integrity of the digital world. Through strong partnerships, targeted communication strategies can be effectively implemented. This collaboration helps raise awareness about the threat of deepfakes and provides appropriate solutions for building a safer and more trustworthy digital environment.
